Submissions Deadline: Manuscripts due 1 July 2018

Scope:

The bi-annual international conference on High Power Laser Ablation (HPLA) celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018. Since the first meeting in 1998, this conference has grown into a premier international meeting in the field of laser-material interactions, laser ablation, and numerous applications of laser ablation. It brings together the leading experts from academia, industry, and government research centers representing all leading research groups worldwide.

The participants of the conference have expressed a strong need to publish selected presentations in a peer-reviewed journal. In response, this special section will be mainly based on the top work presented at the HPLA conference, though authors may also submit relevant work to this special section even if they did not attend the conference.

This special section will consider manuscripts with original, significant, and previously unpublished results in the areas related to laser ablation and applications, including (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Ultra-high intensity lasers: from Earth to cosmos
  • Ultrashort pulse effects
  • Ultrafast materials processing
  • Laser-materials interaction in a liquid environment
  • Laser modification of surface microstructure and morphology
  • Femtosecond repetitive action on materials
  • Theory and simulation
  • Thermal and mechanical coupling for ultrashort pulses
  • Laser direct writing
  • Laser-induced shock applications
  • MAPLE and materials processing
  • New results in high-power lasers and their applications
  • Promising new laser and optical technologies
  • Biological applications
  • Next generation beamed energy propulsion
  • Plasmonics and metamaterials

To submit a manuscript for consideration in the special section, please prepare the manuscript according to the journal guidelines and submit the paper via the online submission system. A cover letter indicating that the submission is intended for this special section should be included with the paper.

Manuscripts published in the Proceedings of SPIE are welcome for submission to this special section after proper revision to meet the standards of a journal publication. All submissions will be peer-reviewed in accordance with the journal's established policies and procedures.

Optical Engineering doesn't have mandatory publication charges, but open access publication is optional for a fee of $960.

Please contact Dr. Claude Phipps if you would like to prepare a review paper for this special section.
